Thanks - I like the William Cowper quote - perhaps
with a pic of a GNU, at a terminal, breaking free
of its chains?
Cowper also said ``They that fight for freedom undertake
The noblest cause mankind can have at stake.''
I wonder if the Camus will go down so well with
goal keepers being held in such low regarrd curently?
Still he's not English, so can't really be blamed ;-)
(btw, the Camus can also be translated as ``Freedom is
nothing /else/ but a chance to be better'', which sounds
a little less nihilistic).

Thanks - I've used it in articles before, but I'm sure
it's not original.
Other suggestions:
I wish that every human life might be pure transparent freedom.
- Simone de Beauvoir
( a bit hippyish, but would work well on a tee shirt
with the right picture)
Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.
- Moshe Dayan
(comments as above)
No one is free when others are oppressed
(with suitably militant GNU =o)
We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice
it.
- William Faulkner
(would be good with image of coder and GPL?)
I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of
the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by
violent and sudden usurpations.
- James Madison, speech, Virginia Convention, 1788
(would be good with cartoon of someone/GNU under attack from
DRM, patents, DCMA, proprietary extensions onto the Internet, etc.)
Freedom is the will to be responsible to ourselves.
- Nietzsche
I realise that GNU is just representative of GNU/Hurd and not
epitome of /all/ Free Software, but it does make a good cartoon ;-)
Pictures are the problem - do we have any illustrators
on this list? Perhaps we should appeal on the other list?

Hmm - we may need to have designs before then - I'll
let the list know when I hear back from Geoff.
